Putting the hammock to sleep

On Friday night, just as we were putting Antigone to bed in her hammock, the spring broke. They’re Olympic-grade things, but I think part of the nylon safety cord that runs inside the spring had become jammed between one of the spring’s coils, causing a heat and stress fracture over time. We’ve been meaning to retire it in favour of other places to sleep for a while, but perhaps not in so calamitous a manner.

Well, suffice to say that Tiggy thought it was the coolest game out while we frantically disassembled her unloved (except by the cats) baby cot from the spare room and reassembled it as a toddler bed sans slat walls. But at 11 p.m., when the realisation that she wasn’t going to sleep in the hammock again - EVER -
set in, we got to see real unadalterated toddler anguish. She cried so hard mourning the hammock; you could see the loss and bereavement pouring palpably from her. She woke again in the night and cried again so hard that she began to make vomiting, choking sounds.

Every night since it’s been a battle to convince her that she is a relaxed little person and can close her eyes and nod off, but it seems to be getting better.

Don’t even mention daytime sleeps.
